Have you ever looked up at the sky on a clear night and felt overwhelmed at the sheer size of that huge hemispherical dome above you with thousands of little dots of light? And probably noticed how, as the night passed by, the whole dome seemed to move !
If yes, you have just made your first astronomical observation. If the Earth were transparent, you would see the stars on the other half of this starry dome, below your feet, and you’d get the impression you were standing at the center of a velvety-black sphere speckled with stars.
